Comprehensive vs. Collision — The Difference Matters
Windshield damage is covered under comprehensive coverage, not collision. Comprehensive covers damage from things other than crashes: weather, road debris, vandalism, animal strikes. If a rock kicked up by a truck on I-95 cracks your windshield, that''s a comprehensive claim.
If you don''t have comprehensive coverage — if you only have liability or collision — your windshield isn''t covered. You pay out of pocket. Most full-coverage policies in Virginia include comprehensive; check your declarations page if you''re not sure.
The Deductible Question
Here''s where people get confused. Your comprehensive deductible applies to windshield claims in Virginia unless your policy specifically includes "zero-deductible glass coverage." Some policies include it automatically. Others don''t.
Call your insurance company and ask specifically: "Do I have zero-deductible glass coverage on my policy?" If yes, your replacement is $0 out of pocket. If no, you pay your deductible — typically $100–$500 depending on your policy — and insurance covers the rest.
Filing a glass claim doesn''t raise your rates in most cases. It''s a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim, and insurers in Virginia generally don''t surcharge for glass.
How the Claim Process Actually Works
- Call your insurance company or file online to open a claim. They''ll give you a claim number.
- Choose your shop. You have the right to choose who replaces your glass — the insurance company cannot require you to use a specific shop.
- Give us the claim number and your insurance carrier. We bill directly.
- We handle the rest: authorization, billing, documentation.
We work with State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, USAA, Erie, Nationwide, and most other major carriers in Virginia. Tiffany handles the insurance coordination — it''s one of the things she does every day.
What Insurance Won''t Cover
- Damage pre-existing before your policy started
- Cosmetic scratches that don''t affect visibility or structure
- Windshields damaged in a collision (that''s a collision claim, not comprehensive)
ADAS Calibration and Insurance
If your vehicle requires ADAS calibration after the windshield replacement — which most post-2018 vehicles do — most insurance policies cover it as part of the glass claim. We document the calibration and bill it through the claim. You shouldn''t be paying for calibration out of pocket if you have comprehensive coverage.
